Variable Spectrum Synthesizer

We have implemented a novel system capable of synthesizing multiple arbitrary optical spectra using an arc lamp, a linear variable filter to disperse the light, a digital micromirror device (DMDTM) to select wavelengths, and optics to recombine the selected spectra.  The system was first used as a biomedical research tool, but other applications are possible.   This system delivers a line of light containing multiple, independently controlled spectra spanning 400nm to 700nm that can be controlled on a 20 microsecond time scale.

Below is the device, a spectrum that was formed and the DLP image that generated the spectra.
