Alignment
The principle of alignment is used to bring order and purpose to elements within a composition (Saw). To insure that nothing is placed arbitrarily on the page. Simply having room to place something is not enough. A stronger cohesive unit is created when items are aligned(1). Imaginary lines are created when elements are aligned which lead the viewer's attention(2). Being consciously aware of this effect helps give you control over your design. There are other design principles that work together when alignment is used. Continuance, closure and proximity, for example, help us complete the missing pieces of information in a design or image(3).
