Balance
Balance is the distribution of visual information, or weight, in a composition (Lauer). We may not be aware of it but we are constantly looking for balance. We notice when a photograph or design seems to have a lot of weight on one side. Just like adjusting a crooked frame hanging on a wall, we subconsciously want to rearrange the elements to achieve balance. The basic types of balance are asymmetrical, symmetrical(1) and radial(2).
