Introduction to Design
The concept of design is synonymous with the idea of creativity. However, design includes other characteristics such as planning and organization. While creativity may seem like a foreign language, planning and organization are two concepts that we can definitely understand. Design concerns itself with the visual organization of a piece. Creativity adds originality to a project but it must still be well planned and organized. When it comes to graphic design, the design process is used to find visual solutions to problems. Just as in any problem solving, understanding basic principles helps us find a suitable solution to even the most complex problems.

The following section presents basic design principles that help in the creation of a successful design. They should not be considered as rules but instead as guidelines for what works more effectively. Following these basic principles will help you make decisions on how to use design elements to control what the viewer sees, create images that communicate better and produce work that is more organized, unified and interesting.
