The use of line is a way of communicating, a way of telling a story. Just like in story telling, it's not just what you say but how you say it. The quality of a line is like the voice intonation a person uses to emphasis elements of a story.
Line quality describes the appearance of a line and does not include its direction. This includes whether a line is thick, thin, light, dark, broken, solid or tapered. By varying a line's quality, direction and its repetition, we are provided with enough visual information to interpret them as a more complex object.
